National Desexing Month

It is estimated that more than 200,000 healthy cats and dogs are put down every year in Australia because they don’t have homes.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 9th August 2006 - Back to News

During National Desexing Month in August, the National Desexing Network (NDN) along with vets, refuges and Council, are urging cat and dog owners and people who are caring for stray cats to get these animals desexed.

National Desexing Month has been inspired by a similar campaign run in America by the Doris Day Animal Foundation. "Spay Day USA" has been running for 12 years and more than two million cats and dogs have been desexed since 1995. It is hoped the campaign in Australia will have a similar positive impact.

Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon urged home owners to consider the benefits of desexing pets.

"Over 200,000 animals are destroyed each year because suitable homes can’t be found for them," said Mr Laydon.

"That’s not a figure that any animal lover feels good about."

More than 100 participating vets have so far registered with NDN and are offering incentives to desex cats and dogs. To find out which vets near you will be participating in the National Desexing Month, contact NDN on 1300 368 992.

Council’s animal registration program offers a considerable reduction for pet owners who have had their animals desexed.

"As responsible pet owners, we all need to consider the impact of unwanted animals," said Mr Laydon.

"To encourage people, registration for a desexed pet is $22 instead of $75."

Mr Laydon also pointed out that under Victorian State Law, all cats and dogs aged over three months were required to be registered.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Local Laws team will be traversing the Shire over the next few months to check that all pets are registered.

Animal registrations can be paid at any Shire office and more details can be obtained by calling the Local Laws team on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.
