Letter to the Editor – Labor rewrites history

A response to a letter published on September 12 from Resources Minister Wade Noonan.

By Portal Admin - 15th September 2016 - Back to News

Dear Editor,

I write in response to a letter to the editor published on Monday, September 12, from Resources Minister Wade Noonan, who appears to have a very short memory.

Mr Noonan obviously didn’t read the Latrobe Valley Express on Monday, September 5, where a letter to the editor from Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh was published.

Mr Walsh clearly articulated the position of The Nationals and even welcomed the current Labor Government’s continuation of the former Nationals-Liberal Government’s moratorium on unconventional gas in Victoria.

Mr Noonan should well remember it was the Nationals-Liberal Coalition that also introduced a moratorium on fracking and legislated to ban the use of harmful BTEX fracking chemicals.

It was the former Labor Government – which Mr Noonan was part of – that not only introduced the unconventional onshore gas industry to Victoria without any community consultation, but also approved 73 exploration licences and 23 fracking permits before any research or understanding of the impact on our environment and valuable water resources were known.

As Mr Walsh stated in his letter: "our farmers and rural communities are one of the powerhouses of Victoria’s economy and The Nationals will always fight to ensure that the land and water resources they need are protected".

That is something I hope we can all agree on.
