Country Grab-Bag Will Fool No-One

Labor’s grab-bag of announcements will not make up for seven years of neglect, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Parliment Of Victoria - 8th November 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said country Victoria had missed out on vital funding from the Bracks Government, because it had chosen instead to spend $500,000 per day on advertising and has wasted $1,000 million on major project blow-outs.

"Labor has been sitting on its hands for the past seven years, and just three weeks from the election, Premier Steve Bracks has decided to promote re-announcements as positive initiatives for country Victoria," Mr Davis said.

"Yet, there are many aspects of the Bracks Government’s country Victoria policy which do not stack up, including:

  • Pre-announcing the next four years of routine school infrastructure funding and disguising it as a new initiative;
  • Spending even more tax-payer’s money on the failed ‘Farce Rail’ system and claiming an extra 1400 extra seats will be created on the V/Line network, despite also stating the new seats will allow for phasing out of older stock;
  • Announcing a multi-million dollar dental school in Bendigo, yet failing to fund places for new students to attend the school;
  • Spending more than $12 million on yet another bureaucracy rather than direct assistance, this time on the coal industry; and,
  • Re-announcing an existing program which has been operating for decades to support agricultural societies.

The Liberal Party on the other hand announced its plan for Country Victoria in July, giving Victorians plenty of time to learn what they can expect from a Liberal Government.
