Major of the Morwell Police Precinct will be the speaker at November meeting. Residents are invited to come and hear this speaker who is the highest ranking police officer in the area. Vehicle Theft:The impact of these crimes far exceeds issues of a financial nature and extends to significant disruption in the day to day activities of the community. In Victoria, there was a 48 per cent reduction in the incidence of theft of motor vehicle offences and a 27.1 per cent reduction in theft from motor car offences over the past five years. Approximately 63 per cent of reported vehicles were stolen from outside private addresses, in the street, in private driveways or in shopping centre car parks. During 2005/06 there were 47,074 recorded thefts from motor cars. This was an increase of 3.8 per cent from the previous reporting period and was the first increase since 2000/01. Approximately 34 per cent of vehicles were entered by smashing windows. Number plate theft has traditionally been associated with masking the identity of vehicles used in the commission of serious crimes. Number plate theft is also linked to toll evasion (CityLink) and to avoid detection by road safety cameras. There are also occasions when stolen number plates have been used on unregistered vehicles to avoid detection by authorities. In more recent times, rising fuel costs are impacting on number plate theft and there are strong links between these thefts and the incidence of petrol theft (drive-offs). An increase from 9067 reported number plate thefts in 2004/2005 to 11,963 in 2005/2006 represents an increase of 31.9 per cent over the past 12 months. Party Safe:Are you planning an end of the year celebration, farewell party, or BBQ? Unfortunately these events can be spoiled by the arrival of uninvited guests and gate crashers. The first rule to hosting the perfect party is being prepared. People can help make their social occasion run smoothly by registering their event with the local police on the Party Safe register. The register is aimed at reducing the incidence of gate crashing and anti social behaviour at parties and social functions. All you need to do is fill in the PartySafe registration form available from your local police station, and return it at least one week before your party is being held. The registration form and poster and other material can also be downloaded and printed from the Neighbourhood Watch website.
