Year of the Volunteer launched with Twilight PicnicInternational Year of the Volunteer marked with Twilight Picnic at Kernot Hall. By Latrobe City Council - 24th January 2001 - Back to News Latrobe City Council is holding the first of its celebration events marking the International Year of the Volunteer, with a Twilight Picnic for Council’s volunteers at Kernot Hall on Tuesday 6 February.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning said that the United Nations General Assembly declared 2001 as the ‘International Year of the Volunteer’, and as a consequence, activities and events had been planned throughout the year to honour and recognise volunteering in Latrobe.
“The Twilight Picnic is the first of a number of these events that will recognise and celebrate the vital contribution that Latrobe’s volunteers make to the safety and well-being of all citizens,” Cr Hanning said.
“On this occasion, Council’s Meal on Wheels volunteers, We Care volunteers and Adult Day Activity Support Service (ADASS) volunteers have been invited to a picnic, where they will be personally thanked for the tireless work they carry out, enhancing the lives of thousands of other Latrobe citizens.
“Meals on Wheels volunteers ensure that the elderly citizens, and aged and younger people with a disability, receive one nourishing hot meal every day; We Care volunteers provide friendship and companionship for aged isolated clients; and ADASS volunteers assist with activities which enhance the recreation needs of aged clients,” Cr Hanning explained.
“The Twilight Picnic and the other events planned, will not just recognise and thank those who give their time and talents for the benefit of others, but will highlight the magnificent work being done by thousands of volunteers in the community; and help foster enthusiasm from other citizens prepared to dedicate some of their time for the benefit of others.
“Volunteers come from all walks of life. They are working in the arts and heritage areas, working on environmental and conservation projects and in sport; they work with young people, old people, women, men, children and animals; the disadvantaged and the able. Volunteers are there ready to step in when an emergency threatens life or livelihood. They assist others reach their potential, provide compassion and support; and further good-will among mankind. In this year, the ‘International Year of the Volunteer’, Latrobe City will especially recognise and thank them on behalf of all citizens of Latrobe,” Cr Hanning said.
