Scams A phone-based scam targeting the Chinese community has been bought to the attention of Consumer Affairs Victoria. The caller speaks in Mandarin or Cantonese and asks consumers to participate in a survey in order to be placed in a draw to win a prize. Consumers then receive a call back requesting an up-front payment to collect their prize. CAV has placed a consumer alert on the website warning consumers of this scam.
Pedestrian Safety:
Approximately 75% of pedestrian accidents involving older people occur whilst they are crossing the road. A total of 60 pedestrians were killed on Victorian roads in 2009, which represents 19% of all fatalities. Of those, four pedestrians were aged 50-59, seven were aged between 60-69 and there were 23 fatalities for those 70+.
In recent times there has been an increase in the number of pedestrian collisions.
Especially vulnerable are:
Densely built up and busy urban environments are areas where pedestrians are most at risk.
PEDESTRIAN DOs:
-
· Be alert -Look and Listen!
-
· Choose a safe place to cross. Use traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, pedestrian refuges, and overpasses and underpasses.
-
· Start crossing only on a green pedestrian light.
-
· Wear brightly coloured clothing especially when crossing during the night time.
-
-
• Allow enough time to cross. Know your limitations -if you are slower than you used to be, allow more time to cross.
-
· As you get off a tram, look both ways for approaching traffic and trams.
-
Keep scanning for oncoming traffic while crossing the road.
PEDESTRIAN DON'Ts:
-
· Avoid crossing near the crest of hill or on a bend.
-
· Drivers don't always give way to you (even if they should).
-
· Don't step from the kerb until traffic has stopped.
-
· Avoid emerging from between parked vehicles.
-
· Headphones and mobile phones cause distractions -take extra care!
ISSUES
VISIBILITY
One of the key factors involved in pedestrian crashes is that other road users do not see them until it is too late, or that they step out from concealed locations. Light coloured clothing with reflective properties is the safest option for pedestrians, especially at night.
RULES FOR PEDESTRIANS
As for other road users, specific road rules apply for pedestrians. Failure to obey these rules is often a contributor to pedestrian crashes. To minimise the risk of being involved in a crash, pedestrians should always use crossings and obey the signals.
ALCOHOL
Just as for drivers, pedestrians can be affected by alcohol. This is usually demonstrated by a slowing of reflexes and impairment in judgment. This can lead to errors in judgment when crossing the road.
AGE
Young children are at higher risk as pedestrians due to lack of experience and skills needed to be a safe road user, and therefore should always be supervised by adults around traffic. At the other end of the spectrum, adults over 60 years of age start to experience a change in their mobility and deterioration in their eyesight and hearing, which can make it more difficult to judge distances and the speed of traffic.
