Temporary 5 Knot Speed Limit On Lake NarracanA temporary boating speed limit of 5 knots has been imposed on Lake Narracan waters. By Latrobe City - 16th November 2007 - Back to News The speed restriction applies to all waters in the lake, effectively placing the entire lake unsuitable for water skiing, and jet-skis.
Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said council has been advised that outflows from Lake Narracan will be reduced following the breaching of the Latrobe River into the Yallourn open cut mine.
"Additional water will be stored in the lake while work is being undertaken to develop an alternative river course downstream.
"As a result, the water level in Lake Narracan will rise significantly, and low areas in and around the lake will become submerged, creating numerous potential hazards for boating.
"In the interest of safety, Latrobe City applied to Marine Safety Victoria to affect a temporary speed restriction zone to Lake Narracan as a whole, and that restriction is now in force," Mr Buckley explained.
"Until further notice, boat speed on Lake Narracan will be restricted to 5 knots."
Mr Buckley said council had been in discussions with representatives of the Latrobe Valley Water Ski Club who are in complete agreement with the temporary speed restriction being imposed.
"Fortunately water skiers, power boat and jet ski enthusiasts have a locally available alternative venue, Hazelwood Pondage, to enjoy their sport," Mr Buckley said.
"The situation at Lake Narracan will be reviewed weekly, and the zoning will revert to that normally applying, when conditions allow," Mr Buckley added.
