Latrobe Regional Gallery Curator, Vanessa McRae, said children will be amused and entertained by the exhibition. "Australia, an island continent of extreme landscapes such as the harsh outback, desert plains, lush green tropical rainforests, soft blue grey bushland and majestic beaches, provides the setting for many of the stories in Australian children’s picture books that are included in this exhibition," Ms McRae explained. "The collection of illustrations from the Dromkeen Children’s literature collection, includes examples of picture books portraying unique aspects of the Australian landscape in words and images." Ms McRae said that a particular feature of the exhibition is the diversity of the visual and written interpretations of our landscape, providing an opportunity to consider the varied notions and ideas of what constitutes a backyard, bush or the beach. "Not simply because of their geographical location but because of the varying perceptions of the authors and illustrators who created the stories, drawing on their personal experiences, knowledge, attitude and cultural influences to produce works which capture the essence of the nature of the Australian landscape," she explained. "This is the first exhibition among many in the Latrobe Regional Gallery program that are aimed specifically at children. The exhibition is ‘child friendly’ with works being hung at an appropriate eye level to enable children to fully appreciate the illustrations," Ms McCrae said. Included in the exhibition is a selection of the published books that the illustrations were produced for.
