Kiss of Death:
A Canadian teenager allegedly died from an allergic reaction brought about by a kiss from her boyfriend, who’d eaten peanut butter on toast hours earlier.
As it turned out her death was actually the result of a severe asthma attack. Because nine hours had passed between when the boy ate the peanut butter and when he kissed his girlfriend, the Coroner found that the kiss and the girl’s death were unrelated. He used new research to support his verdict.
US researchers got volunteers to eat two tablespoons of peanut butter on a sandwich, and saliva samples were collected at various time points afterwards. They found that after one hour peanut allergen was undetectable in 87% of participants. For the remaining participants, the maximum amount detected after one hour was one hundred times below the lowest dose reported to cause an allergic reaction. None had detectable levels four hours later.
It is not uncommon, however, for someone with a peanut allergy to suffer an allergic reaction after sharing utensils with or kissing someone who’s just eaten peanuts, the reaction can be severe. Its important if you have an allergy to peanuts you’re aware of the risks. (from Choice, Australian Consumer’s Association)
Theft From A Car:
Theft from motor car is a purely opportunistic offence. If people did not leave valuables in their cars then thieves would simply keep walking past their vehicle.
Reducing Theft:
-
· Drivers need to ensure that satellite navigation systems are removed from sight and phones and other small electrical items, property and money are not left on display, particularly when cars are left in public transport car parks.
-
· Do not place items in your car boot, console or under your front seat.
-
· Park in a well lit area.
-
· Make sure you lock all doors and windows.
-
· Consider fitting a car alarm or other security device.
-
· Report any suspicious incidents to police on 000.
-
· Fit security screws to your vehicles number-plates to prevent their unlawful removal.
-
If Your Vehicle is Stolen:
-
· Report it to police immediately.
-
· Give police the registration number, make, model and colour of the vehicle.
-
· Notify police of the location and time of disappearance.
-
· Notify your insurance company immediately.
Daylight Saving:
Daylight saving ends on the first weekend in April. Don’t forget to change your Smoke Detector batteries, write the date they are installed on the batteries so you know how long they have been in use. It is recommended that you use a vacuum cleaner on the vents in the smoke detector casing to keep them clear.
