Update On Bogong (South) Complex FireThe Bogong South Complex fire managed by Swifts Creek, Bairnsdale and Orbost Incident Management Teams, is now about 380000 hectares, with 1700 kms of edge By DSE/CFA - 3rd February 2003 - Back to News The portion of the Bogong South Complex fire managed by Swifts Creek, Bairnsdale and Orbost Incident Management Teams, is now about 380000 hectares, with 1700 kms of edge.
The fire has been generally quiet overnight and work has concentrated on backburning and establishing containment lines.
Successful backburns were undertaken in the Amboyne area north west of Tubbut and in the Gelantipy area, with many kilometres of backburning and control lines established.
The Buchan Caves Reserve will be closed from tonight, as it is to be used as a Staging Area.
The News South Wales Rural Fire Service, who have been assisting in East Gippsland will be going home today, to be replaced by four CFA Strike Teams. Thanks must also go to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service as they head for home after helping our teams fight the fires.
There has been fire activity in the Cassilis and Brookville area and an active fire edge was also identified near Mount Hotham. This will be the first task of the Aircrane this morning when cloud lifts. Hand crews and a strike team will be retained at Mount Hotham until the area is contained.
In the Dargo area, the focus is on containing two spotfires north of the town at Matheson’s Flat and Mount Birregun. There are eight dozers with 32 DSE/DPI crew, with asset protection the priority. The main fire is still approximately 24kms north of the town.
Containment lines will continue to be established around private property and assets in the Tubbut/Deddick/Bonang area and a major containment line is being constructed between Victoria and New South Wales in an effort to limit the south easterly spread of the fire.
The weather over the next few days is expected to assist with efforts to consolidate the edges of the fire.
