The IT Industry is being warned of a skills shortage as evidenced by a recent article in ‘The Australian.’ The Gippsland School of Information Technology is preparing its courses with this in mind by offering the Bachelor of Information Technology in 2004 with a new major that will provide for expertise in Web technology.

Regional campuses such as Gippsland Campus are going to be even more important in future years as the population declines, according to Joanne Murphy, the person responsible for careers information on the campus. As a result of an ageing workforce and declining population, competition for skilled staff will be extremely intense. Regional areas with universities stand to fare much better in the competition for able bodied workers with studies showing that students who study in a region tend to be more likely to stay and work in that area.

‘Pooh Corner’ child minding facility run by the Student Union at the Gippsland Campus has received the highest rating possible of a maximum two-year accreditation from the Department of Human Services.

• Making the Grade

The Gippsland Campus Student Union dinner for past presidents and life members was held last Friday at the Gippsland Campus. Guest speaker was Val Callister, Regional Director for the Department of Human Services, life member and past President (1974) of MUGSU Inc. Val attended the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education completing a BA (1977) and holds post graduate qualifications in Education and Health Administration. Val has been a schoolteacher, the Chief Executive Officer of a large community health service and was a member of State Parliament for nearly eight years during the 1980's.

• Open subject

Students from Yarra Valley Secondary College and Gippsland Grammar Sale are visiting the Gippsland Campus this week. Students will be involved with interactive activities at the various Faculties, touring the campus, visiting accommodation and enjoying a pizza lunch.
