As the lead university in the Victorian Education and Research Network (VERN) consortium, Monash University believes the recent funding announcement of $3 million to provide microwave and fibre network links between Traralgon, Sale, Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance sites will result in improved service for Gippsland area education providers and researchers. VERN is a consortium of the nine Victorian universities and CSIRO. Within the VERN project each institution is responsible for funding its own connections to the fibre backbone. Once connected, staff and students on these campuses will potentially be able to participate as equal partners in national and international collaborative education and research activities.
