Westernport Water tips ‘top drop’ tap water in 2008

A $175,000 project to install a state-of-the-art chlorine dosing system will make tap water a top drop for Westernport Water customers.

The flow-paced residual system gradually adds disinfecting chlorine to the water, meaning no heavy dosing and far less objectionable smell and taste.

Trials have been run at Newhaven and Kilcunda over the past 10 months and the new system is due to be in place next month.

Westernport Water’s Technical Officer, Projects and Systems, Neil Waters explained: "We are now able to trickle the disinfecting agent into the water through a network of nine sites. It will help cut the dosage rates.

"Additionally, the new pumps and analysers will see the chlorine distributed more evenly, exactly where it is needed. The analysers assess how much chlorine is needed and automatically adjust the dose."

Westernport Water’s Managing Director David Mawer said: "The new system gives us better control over our disinfection management and helps prevent any risk of under or overdosing."

It will also save about 5ML of water a year – the amount of water that had to be used for repeated sampling and testing will be much less, he added. "Now that won’t be water going down the drain."

Mr Mawer said Westernport Water’s catchments include a variety of farms, and this provides water of variable quality. The droughts of the past few years have heightened the challenge of providing water to Australian standards, he added.

"We do get occasional complaints about water quality, but sometimes we’re having to work with a less-than-perfect raw product, especially after heavy rainfall."

Mr Mawer said: "It was heartening to see in out last official water quality audit that the number of complaints had fallen 30% on the previous 12 months. Not only have we managed to make the supply more secure, we’ve also been able to improve the quality of the water," he said. "It’s an impressive double-bill and one that we’re working to maintain."
