Monthly Market Showcases Wellington

A mini "Harvest Festival" is being launched by Wellington Shire Council to showcase its fine food and wine produce monthly.

The fresh food "Farmer’s Markets" will be held at Sale’s Greenwattle Racecourse on the third Saturday of each month, starting 18 October.

The search is now on for local growers and producers who want to be involved in selling fresh vegetables, free range eggs, smoked meats, walnuts, olive oil, free range chickens, gourmet produce, jams and pickles and wine and any other produce grown locally.

Nurseries are also invited to sell fruit trees and vegetable seedlings – produce people can grow to eat.

Wellington Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb said the intention is for customers to be able to talk to the growers, learning how to choose the freshest produce.

"We will have the producers of fresh fruit and vegetables on hand to help consumers understand what season is best for the purchase of each type of produce – when it tastes best as well as how to cook it and how to prepare it," he said.

"Locals will learn what is grown and produced locally and they will support these producers.

"For example, who knows there are nine wineries in Wellington Shire?"

The Farmer’s Markets will not only enable customers to purchase fresh local food to serve up at home, they will also provide an opportunity for local cafes, restaurants and caterers to identify and sample local produce.

The Farmer’s Markets will be held in the third Saturday of each month, starting 18 October, from 7am to noon. It will become part of a circuit of four including Bairnsdale and Tyers.

For more information, or to book a stall at the inaugural Farmer’s Market, contact Council’s Economic Development Officer Paul Telfer on 5142 3380.
