Gallery Director Louise Tegart said that the exhibition of contemporary photomedia explored two emerging concerns for many young people – the affirmation of the self through challenge and the construction of identity through mass media. "From dirt bikes to body piercing, from teenage sexuality to hooning, the exhibition brings together photography, video, installation and performance work. The exhibition takes you by surprise, hitting viewers the moment they enter the gallery space. Its strength is its diversity," Ms Tegart explained. "In creating ‘Suburban Edge’, Australian Centre for Photography Director, Alasdair Foster, has brought together artists from all over the country, with every state and territory (bar the ACT) represented. The broad range of artists involved creates a cross-section of cultures and approaches to image-making that allows viewers to draw connections between the artists and their varied backgrounds," Ms Tegart said. "The nostalgic and sometimes painful teenage sexual disclosures; Hobartian domestic backdrops to bikini-clad-rock-chick fantasy dress-ups; 'the washing lady' otherwise a PhD student immortalised on a 3am taxi trip from Darlinghurst to Marrickville; ephemeral tyre sculptures of a Darwin swamp’s resident hoons; homebound voyages of the loner-truckie; the trust that binds a 'family' of pierced and tattooed Perth dwellers; moody surfscapes; and the helmet-cum-gladiatorial headdress of the extreme trail biker, all contribute to make ‘Suburban Edge’ an exciting photomedia group show which honours the edgy realities of often unnoticed suburban lives," Ms Tegart explained. Ms Tegart added that one of the Victorian artists in the exhibition is Lee-Ann Richards. "Richards used the simple device of asking each subject, male or female, to write memories of their first sexual experience on a card and face the camera. The results are touching, funny and revealing. "Richards presents her images suspended from the hangers used to hold trousers by their cuffs and the result is akin to viewing a complex array of sails, each carrying different subjects with messages of delight, disappointment or anxiety," Ms Tegart said. Ms Tegart said that Lee-Ann Richards would be speaking about her work and the exhibition at the Gallery on Tuesday 2 August at "This will be a talk not to be missed by those interested in contemporary photography and the issues of young people," Ms Tegart concluded. The cost of the artist’s talk is $5, or $3 concession, and is free for Gallery Society members. ‘Suburban Edge’ continues at the Gallery until Sunday 4 September.Source: www.gippsland.com Published by: news@gippsland.com
