Ingram pushing for local timber jobs

By Craig Ingram - 7th March 2005 - Back to News

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram has directed a question in Parliament to Bob Cameron, the Minister responsible for VicForests, to guarantee the local processing of sawlogs and the protection of businesses who did not take an exit package under the Our Forests Our Future scheme.

Mr Ingram said the Minister’s response was less than satisfactory.

"During a recent visit to the area, Minister Cameron met with industry representatives who all expressed concerns with these issues and how the transition arrangements from DSE to VicForests would impact on individual businesses under the new, more competitive arrangements for the allocation of timber," Mr Ingram said.

"I have called on the Government in Parliament to ensure that local jobs will be protected and those businesses who did not take a taxpayer-funded exit package are given priority in the allocation of timber.

"It is essential for communities impacted by the OFOF restructure, and the long term security of the timber industry, that these issues are resolved," Mr Ingram concluded.

Mr Ingram also thanked National Party leader, Peter Ryan, for recognising the work he is doing for the timber industry by using his question in a recent National Party press release.
