Drivers Urged to ObserveA speed observation sign will be present in townships throughout the Wellington Shire Council. By Wellington Shire Council - 23rd March 2006 - Back to News Chair of the Wellington Shire Council Road Safety Committee, Councillor Beth Ripper, said that the initiative was part of the effort by council to improve road safety.
"Drivers are often not conscious of their speed in built up areas. These signs draw drivers’ attention to their speed."
The observation sign displays the driver’s speed as they drive past.
"These are observation signs only, they are not speed cameras" said Cr Ripper.
"We hope by educating drivers we can increase awareness of speed and therefore make our roads safer," said Cr Ripper.
"We are working closely with Victoria Police through the Wellington Traffic Operation Group to identify key locations that may benefit from the observation sign" said Cr Ripper.
The unit is owned by Roadsafe East Gippsland and is shared between Wellington Shire Council and East Gippsland Shire Council.
