Opportunity To Recognise Coastal Work

By Peter Hall - 7th October 2005 - Back to News

The 2006 Victorian Coastal Awards for Excellence provide an opportunity to emphasise the good work being done in Gippsland and also the fantastic coastline that is such a feature of the region, according to Gippsland MP Peter Hall.

The Nationals MP has urged local people and groups to consider nominating for the awards, which have 11 different categories.

"As well as being recognition for the work that is being done by a wide range of individuals and groups, these awards are also an opportunity to promote the fantastic Gippsland environment," Mr Hall said.

The categories include Life Time Achievement, Outstanding Individual Achievement, Innovation, Education, Species Protection, Cultural Achievement, Coastal Conservation & Protection by a Community Group, Coastal Conservation & Management by an Appointed Manager, Building & Design, Water Quality and Excellence in Media Activities.

Each nomination must be supported by a written submission of two to three pages, and must also include a photograph or photographs showing projects.

Selection criteria includes that projects contribute to the improved sustainability of the Victorian coast; foster a sense of stewardship by the community; target the causes rather than the symptoms of environmental problems; are best practice; and contribute to the development of partnerships. They must also contribute to the implementation of the Victorian Coastal Strategy 2002.

Mr Hall said the Awards were held annually and presented by the Victorian Coastal Council and Coast Action/Coastcare.

"It is important to realise that the Coastline is managed by a range of people, groups, organisations and governments," Mr Hall said. "I would love to see some of those people and groups who do so much for our coastline standing up to receive one of these awards."

Nominees can be an individual, community group, school, organisation, private company or government agency.

Details of the awards and nominations are available on the web, at www.dse.vic.gov.au/coasts

Nominations can be sent to gerard.clark@dse.vic.gov.au or in hard copy form to the Victorian Coastal Awards for Excellence, 3/8 Nicholson Street East Melbourne, 3002.

The closing date for nominations is 5.00 pm Friday 4 November 2005. Award nominees will be notified regarding their success in Autumn next year.
