STOP HANDBAG THEFT!

Handbag thieves are opportunists and any one can become a victim of handbag theft. With 6500 handbag thefts being reported each year, it is important to be observant of your personal belongings. The majority of handbags stolen were either left unattended or not kept secure whilst shopping, or when using an ATM, or loading bags into the boot in a car park.

HANDBAG THEFT PREVENTION TIPS
  • · The best place for your handbag is on you, zipped up with no valuable items exposed.
  • · Do not leave your handbag unattended on top of a shopping trolley.
  • · If you must, leave your handbag with someone you trust in crowded venues.
  • · In restaurants, put your bag on your lap or on the floor between your feet with your foot resting on the strap. Alternatively place the strap through one leg of the chair.
  • · Never leave your bag in adjacent seats in theatres, halls or public transport.
  • · If using rest rooms, do not place your handbag close to the door or side walls, particularly if there is a gap between the walls and the floor. It could be snatched from the outside.
  • · Secure your handbag close to your body, and be aware of your surroundings.
  • · When placing bags in the boot or vehicle, secure your handbag first before attending to your shopping.
  • · Do not carry large amounts of cash with you. Withdraw only money needed at the time.
  • · Be mindful of distractions; thieves working in pairs may attempt to divert your attention in order to steal your handbag or its contents. Recently Patti Newton’s handbag was stolen, while a female accomplice created a disturbance that attracted everyone’s attention. Her male companion stole Patti’s handbag. She was lucky, the police recovered the handbag and charged the criminals.

Old Unwanted Medicines:

Have you cleaned out your medicine cabinet lately? If not you might find it worthwhile from a safety point of view.

Any old pack of tablets or a half finished foil of no longer needed medication may seem relatively harmless. But keeping medicines that are no longer needed or out of date can be an invitation for confusion and misuse, which can have serious health implications. Accidental poisoning is a real risk with curious children around. Older people, who are the biggest consumers of prescription medicines and have a tendency to hoard them, are particularly at risk.

Help reduce the risk of medication error and child poisoning, by conducting a regular audit of your medicine cabinet, and removing those items no longer needed.

To help with the safe disposal of medication the ‘Return Unwanted Medicines’ (RUM) project was set up in 1998. The RUM project provides every pharmacy in Australia with collection bins, where you can dispose of unwanted medicines at any time. All medicines collected are disposed of in the safest and most effective way. Over 300 tonnes of unwanted medicines are collected in these bins each year.
