Old Unwanted Medicines:Have you cleaned out your medicine cabinet lately? If not you might find it worthwhile from a safety point of view. Any old pack of tablets or a half finished foil of no longer needed medication may seem relatively harmless. But keeping medicines that are no longer needed or out of date can be an invitation for confusion and misuse, which can have serious health implications. Accidental poisoning is a real risk with curious children around. Older people, who are the biggest consumers of prescription medicines and have a tendency to hoard them, are particularly at risk. Help reduce the risk of medication error and child poisoning, by conducting a regular audit of your medicine cabinet, and removing those items no longer needed. To help with the safe disposal of medication the ‘Return Unwanted Medicines’ (RUM) project was set up in 1998. The RUM project provides every pharmacy in Australia with collection bins, where you can dispose of unwanted medicines at any time. All medicines collected are disposed of in the safest and most effective way. Over 300 tonnes of unwanted medicines are collected in these bins each year.
