Monash University School of Rural Health East Gippsland Regional Clinical School will be officially opened on Wednesday, October 29 at 10.30am by The Hon Peter McGauran MP in Bairnsdale. The School will provide teaching, administrative and library facilities, along with academic and student sleeping accommodation for up to 50 medical students per year. The aim of the new development is to give medical students a taste of regional practice and country lifestyle, to enhance their studies and also encourage them to take up regional practice when they graduate.

Professor Karen Francis has been appointed the Chair of Rural Nursing at Monash University Gippsland Campus. The former Associate Professor and Head of School of Clinical Sciences at Charles Sturt University will be working with nurses and health care professionals in Gippsland. Her biggest challenges include devising a strategy to improve nurse retention and recruitment and to improve everyday health care issues, specifically rural male's health issues.

‘Compensation Practices and Economics, Governance, Ownership and Performance Attributes: An Australian Study" is the title of the Faculty of Business and Economics Research Forum to be presented by Associate Professor Keryn Chalmers on Tuesday, October 28 at 1pm in the Business and Economics Conference Room.

The Australian Research Council has awarded Rowena Barrett, Director of Monash University’s Family and Small Business Research Unit at the Gippsland Campus $100,000 for a study of small business job quality.

"The Independent Journal" is an online newspaper launched by Journalism staff at Monash Gippsland last week. The online newspaper showcases news and current affairs stories covered and written by Online and Television Journalism students during second semester. ‘The Independent Journal" can be seen at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/humcass/independentjournal/index.html

"Paying Peanuts for Apples! Is Food too cheap?" is the title of the Monash Environment Institute seminar to be held on Thursday, October 30 at 12noon across three venues via video-link. Led by moderator Rob Gell a panel of experts will discuss whether the price of food should internalise the environmental costs of production.
