The Linfox Property Group yesterday lodged a planning permit application to expand the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The proposal involves an 18 hole golf course and 506 villas adjacent to the existing circuit.

A previously approved 163 room hotel with convention centre, café/brasserie and accommodation lodges will also form part of the expansion plans.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden, today confirmed that the application had been lodged.

"The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is one of the Island’s most significant tourist attractions hosting a range of domestic and international motorsport events, generating significant economic benefits for the region.

"Council has been actively encouraging investment in tourist accommodation to cater for the growing demand for accommodation," said Mr Bawden.

The CEO stressed, however, that the application needed to be assessed on its merits against the policies and strategies contained in the Bass Coast Planning Scheme.

"Council policy, whilst supporting tourism, seeks to contain residential development to existing townships. Council support would be contingent on the proposal demonstrating its integration with the Grand Prix Circuit and the environmental values of the surrounding coastline.

"Once all required information is available, the application will be advertised for public comment prior to the Council formally considering the proposal," Mr Bawden concluded.
