Father Peter Norden, the man who commissioned the controversial Social Disadvantage report in Victoria, will be guest speaker at Gippsland Campus 12:30 pm on Thursday 29 April 2004. The report looked at how Victorian communities were doing. Low ratings for areas such as Gippsland drew a harsh reaction from those who saw the report as reinforcing an unfair and negative image of the region. More than 60 people have already registered for the event which is being hosted by the Institute for Regional Studies. To register call 5122 7129 by 27 April. Engineering lecturer Ray Beebe has just returned from China where he taught a course to 80 people at a plant in Guangdong Province. Mr. Beebe has given numerous short courses on the subject in Australia, but this is his first request to provide his engineering expertise in China.

Are Latrobe Valley businesses going to create more jobs? That’s what Associate Professor Rowena Barrett is hoping to find out with a survey she is sending out Friday April 30. Participants are asked to fill the paper out by May 21 and results will be available to the public by the end of July.

• Making the Grade

Prime Minister John Howard's one-day visit to Gippsland on Monday April 19 had positive ramifications for Monash University. Mr. Howard awarded a $98,000 grant to a consortium which is led by The Australian Sustainable Industry Research Centre (ASIRC) at Monash University Gippsland Campus. ASIRC was founded by Monash University, Gippsland Water and the Cooperative Research Centre for Waste Management and Pollution Control (NSW) to provide Australian industry and the community with sustainable solutions for the management of resources, waste and the environment.
