Always make sure there’s an adult around when you use heaters. * Don’t overload power points & replace damaged cords. * Always have a working smoke alarm between the living and sleeping areas of your home and change the battery once a year. * Always place a screen in front of an open fire and put fires out before going out or to bed. * Keep pot handles on the stove tuned inwards so they can’t be knocked over. Open Fires:· Always have a safety screen in front of an open fire, have it secured so children cannot come in contact with the fire. · Don’t load too much fuel on at any time. · Make sure the fire is extinguished before retiring for the night. One spark on the carpet can start a fire in your home. · Do not leave very young children unattended near an open fire. · Teach older children of the dangers of an open fire. When You Rent:Many thieves rent the house they live in, and when obtaining the keys to a new house, immediately cut another spare set. When it comes time to vacate, they hand the original keys back to the landlord and still have a set of keys to a house that will soon be occupied by someone else. When renting a house, change the locks and upon leaving, replace them with the originals. You can then re-use them in the next house. That way you have the only set of keys to your house - a small price for peace of mind. Compost Danger:A man died from kidney failure after inhaling fungal spores in the garden compost, according to a study in the Lancet. He developed a rare reaction to Aspergillus Fumigatus, which is commonly found in decayed plant matter. While relatively harmless in small numbers, the spores are dangerous when a large amount is inhaled. People who often come in contact with large amounts of organic waste should wear a face mask.
