An evening of singing, dancing and playing Folk

An evening of singing, dancing and playing Folk is being presented by the Victoria Chorale at Kernot Hall, Morwell at 8pm on Saturday 13 September.

By Latrobe City Council - 5th September 2003 - Back to News

The mixed voice choir conducted by Val Pyers will feature together with performances by accordionist David Filice and colourful dance routines from the Pegasus Dance Company directed by Sotiris Sotiriou, and the Hungarian Community Centre Folk Dance Group choreographed by Laszlo Svak and Steve Babinczky.

Latrobe City’s Manager Arts, Paul Holton, said the Victoria Chorale’s repertoire would include a number of well-loved folk songs from around the world.

"The international flavour of songs such as Frere Jacques from France, The Nightingale from Russia, Loch Lomond from Scotland and Hava Nagila from Israel will be complemented by the folk songs from Italy and Spain, performed by accordionist David Filice, and the fast-paced routines of the two European-influenced dance groups," Mr Holton said.

"The show has been well-received in both Melbourne and Daylesford and the audience has been delighted at the wide range of folk songs included in the performance, as well as by the beautiful hand-made costumes of the dancers. It certainly promises to be a feast for the ears and eyes," Mr Holton said.

Mr Holton said that the Victoria Chorale, now in its tenth year, had sung for the State Orchestra, Victoria State Opera, the Melbourne Festival as well as many regional Victorian festivals.

"The Victoria Chorale also works hard to bring choral programs to provincial Victoria and for the Morwell concert, Mr Pyers, will be returning to the region where he began his career as a choral conductor," Mr Holton added.

"In 1956 Pyers was appointed to the Yallourn High School, where he taught English and History. He soon became involved in the school’s extra curricular music program, especially its annual production of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera," Mr Holton said.

"In the same year, he founded the Yallourn Madrigal Singers, a small group of gifted singers whose work soon earned them a loyal following in the Latrobe Valley as well as in Melbourne. It gives him much pleasure to know that the choir is still an active and important element in the musical life of the Valley," Mr Holton continued.

"In 1965, Mr Pyers founded the Melbourne Chorale, and in 1993 he left to form his present group, the Victoria Chorale. The choir has developed into one of the busiest and best known Victorian choral organisations and we are delighted to welcome them to Morwell," Mr Holton concluded.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and are available from Select Music Systems on 5174 2849. For further information, contact Latrobe City, telephone 1300 367 700.
