State Emergency Service:

The Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) has a new telephone number for members of the public to call if they require emergency flood and storm assistance.

132 500 is now the number to call from anywhere in Victoria, 24 hours a day, for emergency assistance if you or your property is affected by storm or flood. SES volunteers (recognisable in their orange overalls) are trained to provide temporary emergency assistance, to help people to protect themselves and protect their property from further damage. When you phone 132 500 from a landline phone your call will be automatically directed to the nearest SES unit.

The role of the SES volunteer team is to make the area safe. It is the property owner’s responsibility to arrange for the removal of debris and permanent repairs to their property. There is no cost for SES assistance, and all the volunteers are trained to national standards. The SES is a community based organization the volunteers are locals with local knowledge and aware of the critical rescue requirements of your area.

132 500 is for flood or emergency calls only. Triple Zero (000) is for fire, police or ambulance and should only be used in a life threatening emergency. Write these numbers down. (From NHW Sentinel)

Dogs Travelling In Cars:

Animals travelling unsecured in a car pose a significant risk in an accident and therefore should be secured appropriately. In a crash at 48 km/h a large dog could hit the passengers sitting in the front with a force equivalent to 3 tonnes. Even a street directory thrown from the rear parcel shelf to the front of the car, would hit with a force of 150 kg.

CrimeSmart:

Victoria has more police than ever before, and the lowest crime rate in over a decade. We can all help to make Victoria even safer, by being CrimeSmart.

CrimeSmart Tips Inside the House.

Small things can make a difference when it comes to protecting your possessions. Changes you make inside your home can make it less prone to burglary as well as limit the extent of the damage, should you be burgled.

Reduce the chance of your home being burgled by following the CrimeSmart tips.

1. Compile a property inventory and keep a list of all valuables.

2. Photograph expensive items.

3. Mark all valuables with an engraving pen.

4. Have appropriate insurance.

Leave a light on, or even the TV or radio, when you go out.

Smoke Alarms:

Check that your smoke alarms are working, if the batteries have been installed for 12 months they should be replaced

Having a properly working smoke alarm can prevent loss of life in a house fire, providing the early warning you need to get yourself and your family out to safety. So install smoke alarms if your home is still without them.

  • · Test your smoke alarms at least monthly, and clean them regularly.
  • · Replace batteries at least once a year, alarms with low batteries leave you unprotected.
