Ag White Paper Compensates For Cameron’S Black Hole

Shadow Minister for Agriculture Philip Davis has welcomed the Federal Government’s overhaul of its agriculture policies.

By Philip Davis - 2nd March 2005 - Back to News

Mr Davis said Federal Agriculture Minister Warren Truss’ announcement today that there would be an agricultural policy review and white paper produced was good news for Victorian farmers who were fed up of Bracks Government inaction.

"The Federal Government is developing a blueprint for the future of agriculture throughout the country and the Victorian Liberal Party will respond to the signals that the industry puts out during this process," Mr Davis said.

"Victoria needs visionary leaders in agriculture.

"Given Victoria’s farmers have received little direction from the state Agriculture Minister, Bob Cameron, I am pleased the Federal Minister is taking the lead."

Mr Davis said Victorian farmers were consistently frustrated at the lack of support from Bob Cameron and his apparent disinterest in serious issues affecting the industry.

Bob Cameron has failed to stand up for farmers on the issues of:

  • Right to farm
  • Native vegetation restrictive controls
  • Animal liberation extremists
  • Planning - rural zones
                   -
    wind farms

    - toxic dumps

  • New biotechnology (genetically modified crops)
  • Aquaculture regulations
  • Child employment laws

Mr Davis said the Bracks Government’s decisions during the current parliamentary term have dramatically increased the number of pointless rules and regulations farmers must comply with.

"The Bracks Government promised to protect farmers’ right to farm, but actions speak louder than words and they’re strangling farmers with red tape," Mr Davis said.

"There needs to be clear direction about what the agricultural sector needs to make it sustainable into the future."
