The Tank

'Chooks, chainsaws and crayfish….and a water tank that is way too small!

By Linda Logan - 9th November 2007 - Back to News

The Tank, the little musical with the Big Heart returns more relevant now in its 12th season than when it began in Hobart in 2001. This heart-wrenching tale of drought stricken battlers in a tidy country town is set to delight audiences once again as the independently run ensemble take it on the road to Gippsland with shows in Sale and Drouin, and then back to the city for shows in Northcote.

In this rollicking piece of musical theatre we take a one and a half hour journey through the life of Tasmanian countrywoman Dora Carney as she battles bushfires, police, grasping councils and a water tank that is too small and always empty while raising her kids…

The story is largely told by Dora’s eldest son Harold, born with one leg shorter than the other, Harold is rejected by his violent, alcoholic father Roy and embarks on a life of juvenile delinquency. Eventually Harold is forced to flee Tasmania for the mainland and against all odds becomes a successful used car salesman and country & western singer on the Gold Coast and is able to repay his mum for years of struggle with the biggest, shiniest new water tank that anyone in Dora’s valley ever say.

A story of epic grandeur it aint…but in their world Dora and Harold are special people who share a dogged quest for self respect and an unquestioned bond of love. They’re worth knowing!

The Tank has been seen throughout Tasmania and Western Australia, The National Folk Festival in Canberra, The Port Fairy Folk Festival 2006, two years running (2005/6) at the Brunswick Festival, the Victorian Wimmera region for Regional Arts Victoria & the 2006 Darebin Music Feast.

Don't miss your chance to see The Tank in 2007 - performing at the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre in Sale at 8pm Friday 16 and Saturday 17 November as part of the Water Water Arts Festival.

The water water festival 2007 program is now active. Please take the chance to explore our new website www.waterwater.com.au and make your choices for this year’s festival.

"The only play I've bothered seeing twice since Hair!"
Steve Gordon (Xpress Magazine, Perth)

"The Tank is that rare combination of compelling story delivered with real compassion and humour by a fantastic cast, and with the backing of a fantastic band. Don't miss it!"
Martin Walch
