By Bass Coast Shire Council - 7th October 2005 - Back to News

The ride in memory of motorsports legend Barry Sheene has become a highlight of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix says Bass Coast Shire Council’s Special Events Officer Frank Angarane

Last year, over 700 bikes were on the ride from Bairnsdale to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and similar numbers are expected this year. Funds raised from the event this year will go to the Leukemia Foundation.

Riders will depart from Bairnsdale Oval at 10 am. V8 Supercar drivers Steve Richards, Cameron McConville, Paul Weel, Greg Murphy, Jason Richards, Rick Kelly and Todd Kelly will be at the front of the pack, together with Olympics legend Kieran Perkins.

The expected timetable for the ride is as follows:

10 a.m. Depart Bairnsdale

12 noon Arrive Morwell (lunch)

1 p.m. Depart Morwell

2 p.m. Arrive Wonthaggi

3 p.m. Arrive San Remo (refreshments)

3.45 p.m. Depart San Remo for Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit

The riders will travel along the Strezlecki and Bass Highways. After riding through Mirboo North and Leongatha, for the first time the riders will enter Inverloch along William Street and Bayview Ave before rejoining the Bass Highway. The convoy will pass through Wonthaggi along Graham Street and out along South Dudley Road. It should take approximately 30 minutes for all the bikes to pass through the town.

Ride participants will break for refreshments at San Remo, where a representative of the Bass Coast Shire Council will greet them.

"Local community groups have created banners to welcome the riders," said Mr Angarane.

"It’s a great event and we encourage the community to come out and enjoy the spectacle.
