Neighbourhood Watch Area LTB1, Bridle Estate.
Area Manager, Carmen Cook 5134 1920.
Next Meeting
When: Monday 19th of July 2004
Time: 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Salvation Army Hall,
Bridle Road, Morwell.
Guest Speaker:
The Guest Speaker will be Senior Constable Kevin McLaren, the School Resource Officer For the Latrobe Valley
At the Annual General Meeting held in June, Carmen Cook was re-elected Area Manager and Dave Soutar was re-elected Treasurer. Fay Azzopardi volunteered to fill the vacant position of Secretary. We would like to thank Carmen, Dave and Fay for giving up their time to fill these positions. Neighbourhood Watch cannot function without volunteers.
Special thanks is extended to Val Bartholomeusz for working in various positions over the years, and we all value her contributions greatly.
Police Concert:
Once again the residents who attended Kernot Hall to hear the Victoria Police Show Band and the Highland Pipe Band, were treated to an outstanding performance. The two female vocalists covered a wide range of melodies and demonstrated great vocal control and professionalism. Comments afterwards showed many people considered this concert to be one of the best yet. Our thanks to S/C Brendan Clifford who arranged for the staging of the concert, the committee who sold the tickets and the numerous volunteers who helped to make the evening a success.
Crime Stoppers:
The Crime Stoppers program has reinforced its position as Victoria’s most successful community crime-fighting program, by generating a record number of arrests in 2003. Figures released show 719 people were arrested as a direct result of the program in 2003, an increase of 216 in 2002.
These figures show how strongly people feel about reporting crime to help create safer communities.
Information received anonymously to Crime Stoppers last year led to:
· 719 people arrested.
· 3,728 charges laid.
· Over $4.8 million worth of property recovered.
· Over $4.7 million worth of drugs recovered.
· More than 29,000 calls.
Unsolicited Mail:
A company may send you a gift in the mail — a ballpoint pen, a key chain, or a tie. You didn’t order it — it just turned up out of the blue. You may receive something in the post you didn’t order, with an invoice and a covering letter saying the merchandise is yours to keep, once you have paid the money.
This is called inertia selling. If you are the type of person this company is looking for, you may feel guilty about keeping the item without paying for it. Don’t feel guilty! Its yours, and you are under no obligation to pay anything.
Under Australian consumer protection laws, you can do two things if you receive unwanted or unordered goods. First, advise the seller in writing that you don’t want the goods and say where they can be collected. If the seller fails to collect them within one month, the goods become your property. Keep a copy of your letter and preferably send it by registered mail.
Alternatively, just do nothing. If the seller does not pick up the product after three months, it becomes your property. In both cases, during the intervening period, consumers have the responsibility not to use the goods and to keep them safe and secure. Although not illegal, inertia selling is a high pressure sales tactic you can do without.
