Neighbourhood Watch Area LTB1 Newsletter June 2005 (NHW 95) Crime, Safety Walk, Meter Boxes, Police Crime Report. By Malcolm Lawrence - 15th June 2005 - Back to News Neighbourhood Watch Area LTB1, Bridle Estate.
Area Manager, Carmen Cook 5134 1920.
Next Meeting
When: Monday 20th June 2005
Time: 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Salvation Army Hall,
Bridle Road, Morwell.
Crime:
We are experiencing an increase in crime here on the Bridle Estate. In our Neighbourhood Watch Area during the month of April there were 36 reported crimes, the highest ever! Of these crimes 16 were burglaries. In 9 of these burglaries there was no sign of forced entry, the criminal gained entry through unlocked or open doors (7) or Windows (2). There were 10 thefts from motor vehicles, 4 of which were unlocked.
It is up to us to help prevent these crimes by locking up our houses and securing our property. Above all keep a good lookout in our neighbourhood, be a nosey neighbour if necessary. Report any suspicious behaviour to the police by dialling 000 (Triple Zero), no matter how trivial it may seem. Your phone call may help the police to apprehend a criminal and prevent a crime. Remember! your home could be the criminals next target.
Safety Walk:
Two Safety Walks were conducted in our NHW area on Friday 20th May. The First walk starting at 3pm was attended by 19 people from the area, plus Henk Harberts, Brendan Jenkins, Graham Middlemiss, and Senior Sergeant Ricky Ross. This party was split into two groups who went to different parts of our NHW area. The second walk started at 7.30pm and was attended by 15 people plus Henk Harberts. This party was again split into two groups, each group was accompanied by a police officer.
The purpose of these walks was to assess the safety aspects of our NHW area during daylight and after dark. A number of recommendations to improve the safety and the wellbeing of our residents has now been made.
A safer community is achievable through active participation, cooperation and commitment of us all.
Meter Boxes:
There have been instances recently of fuses being removed from meter boxes by persons unknown, plunging the house into darkness and turning off all power. Causing great inconvenience to the householder, the house may be without power for a number of hours. The fuses are usually taken away by the culprits and discarded.
To prevent this happening the meter box can be locked with a "Power Industry Padlock", to which the meter reader has a master key. These special padlocks can be ordered from Bunnings or other hardware shops.
Alternatively the meter box can be locked with an ordinary padlock and a window cut in the meter box door to allow the meter to be read without opening the door.
