Junior Ten Pin Team Triumphs Again

By Morwell Tenpins - 7th April 2004 - Back to News

Following the success of the Latrobe Valley Country Cup teams in March this year the Latrobe Valley Junior Country Cup team was eager to defend the Junior Cup in Geelong last weekend. The tournament consisted of 11 teams from various country tenpin associations playing a round robin competition of 22 games, completing 11 games each day.

The Latrobe Valley juniors had won the cup for the past two years and were looking forward to being the first team to win in three consecutive years. With a very promising team comprising of Katie Arnold, Debra Bosma, Louise Peet, Bruce Mason, Graham Hodgskiss and David Mason they were keen to show the adults how it was done.

The surprising dark horse Ballarat showed the way early, but under the captainship of Katie Arnold, who is a current state representative, the Latrobe Valley team found the lead late on the Saturday afternoon. After an early morning the team fought hard to maintain their lead converting some very close games against Ballarat and Bendigo. Bruce Mason showed some great form and finished the weekend with the top male average of 190. Debra Bosma showed that no injury could keep her down and bowled consistently ending with an average of 189.

After some very tough competition from archenemies Shepparton and Geelong’s home team, they again brought home the cup. The final standing was 1st Latrobe Valley 96pts, 2nd Shepparton 88.5pts and 3rd Bendigo 87.5pts. The top games for the weekend were bowled by Alicia Garioch (Sunraysia) with a 254 and Luke Kairn (Bendigo) with a 247. The top average was bowled by Courtney Murdoch (Geelong) with a 196.

Junior Country Cup has been held for the past ten years and Latrobe Valley has won on 6 occasions. This shows the strength of junior tenpin bowling in the Latrobe Valley. Lets hope that our Senior Shield team can make it a trifecta later this year in Wodonga.
