"The course was designed to enable people with a disability to gain the skills and confidence needed to actively participate on a broad range of committees and reference groups at local, regional and state levels," said Kathryn Pryor, RuralAccess Project Officer of South Gippsland and Bass Coast Shire Councils. "This will ensure the needs of people with a disability are considered in all aspects of planning."
Aiming to build more inclusive communities in Gippsland, the training is part of the ‘Skilling up to shape the future’ project funded by the Department of Human Services to further the objectives of the Victorian State Disability Plan 2002-20012. The participants will assist Chisholm Institute of TAFE to make any refinements to the course content before the training is rolled out in all six municipalities in Gippsland early next year. Approximately 100 training places will be offered to people with a disability across Gippsland. "The potential ramifications of this program are exciting and should be extremely effective in affirming the issues of accessibility and inclusion as integral threads in the fabric of our community strategies," added Kathryn. "It is easy to inadvertently overlook inclusion issues when a committee is not aware of the full implications of their policies and decisions." For further information about the Project, or to lodge an Expression of Interest in undertaking the training, please contact Kathryn Pryor at South Gippsland Shire Council on 5662 9376 or Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2425.
