Gippstafe Tackles Army TrainingA comprehensive training course for members of the Army Reserve 39th Construction Squadron at GippsTAFE’s Yallourn campus has proved successful – and saved a trip to Sydney. By GippsTAFE - 25th June 2004 - Back to News In the past, members of the Squadron seeking to upgrade specific skills have attended the School of Military Engineering in Sydney.
But after an inspection by the Army of the Construction and Safety Department facilities at GippsTAFE, the course has been held locally for the first time for all members of the Squadron.
Warrant Officer Shane McEvoy said: "Normally we only send a few people, say three or four, to Sydney to undertake the training at the School of Military Engineering.
"We can still undertake the specific training here but because it’s close and less costly we can involve all of the people, so everyone is brought in. Some of the personnel from the School of Military Engineering in Sydney came to have a look first and they were very impressed with the TAFE facilities."
More than 12 members of the Squadron are undertaking National Certificates of Competency in a range of construction and safety subjects, including dogging and Elevated Work Platform under the guidance of teacher Kevin Newey, and through the Building Studies Department, block laying and explosive power tools training.
They are using the full range of GippsTAFE equipment, including a 20 tonne Tadano mobile crane.
According to Shane McEvoy, it is important that Squadron members maintain a high level of skill and safety.
"These courses keep our personnel up to speed with the State and Federal Government requirements in relation to safety. The Unit works in public areas quite frequently, so it is important for members of the public and for our own people," he said.
Head of the Construction and Safety Department, Mark Nestor, said it was good that such training could be provided at the local level. "We are also undertaking quite a lot of work for members of the Housing Industry Association, and that, along with the work we are doing with the Army Reserve, shows the level of expertise and equipment that we have available," he said.
