Renowned freelance historian and regular writer for ‘The Age’, Humphrey McQueen will be guest speaker at the Institute for Regional Studies (IRS) seminar on Thursday, June 10 from 1-2pm in the Business & Economics Conference Room. Mr Humphrey will discuss ‘All Capital is Social’ highlighting, how does social capital differ from the capital in capitalism, and was Margaret Thatcher wrong to say that there is no such thing as society, only individuals and their families? This seminar is open to the general public. For catering purposes please contact IRS on 51227129.

An Intellectual Property (IP) Seminar will be held at the Gippsland Campus on Monday, June 7 from 9am-12noon. IP Australia, is presenting the seminar specifically targeted at the university community with speakers outlining what IP Australia can offer, explain how licensing and commercial can benefit staff and internal policies regarding IP. A follow up seminar for Regional Small Businesses will be held at 5.20pm on June 7 at the Powerworks Museum, Ridge Road, Morwell.

• Making the Grade

The ‘Graduate Certificate of Regional Community Development’ at the Gippsland Campus will now be offered to RMIT’s Hamilton Campus in Western Victoria through the Victorian Universities Regional Research Network (VURRN). The VURRN will provide the basis to further extend the Graduate Certificate to Latrobe University, Bendigo, Deakin University, Warrnambool and the University of Ballarat. The Certificate provides skills for workers in various sectors, to engage more effectively with the rural communities of which they are part.

The next exhibition to open at the Gippsland Campus’ Switchback Gallery is titled ‘Forest of No Distanceby Melbourne Printmaker, Megan McPherson. Megan is also a lecturer in Printmaking at the Gippsland Campus and her exhibition brings together traditional printmaking and modern digital technology. The exhibition will open on Tuesday, June 1 with the artists floor talk at 5.30pm on Tuesday, June 22.

Over three days approximately 3000 students from Gippsland Secondary Schools will be taking part in the Tertiary Information Service (TIS) Tour of Gippsland. Designed to inspire students to undertake further study beyond their VCE, TIS was set up 25 years ago to provide prospective students with information about their tertiary options and is the only cooperative venture involving Universities and TAFE’s from throughout Australia. The tour will begin on Monday, 31 May in Moe and Traralgon, then Sale and Bairnsdale on Tuesday, June 1 and finishing on Thursday, June 3 in Warragul and Leongatha. Staff from Marketing & Public Affairs at the Gippsland Campus will be representing Monash University on the tour.
