Ella Angarane, Bass Coast Shire Council’s Recreation Planner, said work has commenced and the new facilites will allow the centre to better cater for all members of the community.

"The upgrade of toilets and showers will meet current standards and allow more members of the community to access the facility.
"New features include a fully accessible unisex toilet and shower, and toilets that allow easier access for all users. The showers will be partially screened for more privacy and the whole area will have improved non-slip surfaces, " Ms Angarane explained.

The redevelopment is being undertaken by the Bass Coast YMCA with funding from Sports and Recreation Victoria’s Minor Facility grants and Bass Coast Shire Council.

The total cost of the project is $150,000. Ms Angarane was impressed that the design for the retrofit was able to incorporate a range of enviromentally sustainable features. "This upgrade has meant that we can incorporate modern environmental efficiencies while meeting improved access needs of the facility.

"We have included low flow water fixtures, skylights, water harvesting to flush the toilets and a sensor flush urinal for water conservation, into the design," said Ms Angarane.

Local builder TS Construction has been engaged for the project which is expected to be completed by Friday, 16 December.
During the upgrade, temporary toilet and shower facilites will be available at the centre. The spa and sauna will also be closed during the works.
