The ‘big picture’ view is important to the strategic direction that Council takes and the Mayor’s role is important in defining the path that is taken. Council decisions are made by a majority vote and the Mayor has one vote and in certain situations, a casting vote as well. So whilst the Mayor’s role is not a powerful one, the experience of being Mayor is an extraordinary educational opportunity for Councillors to see the ‘big picture’ and one that should be shared around as a skills development process. It is for this reason I am not standing for re-election. I have learnt a great deal about the shire in the past eight months and have really enjoyed visiting all the different towns and communities and meeting lots of new faces. It has been inspiring to see the initiative and dedication of various groups determining better futures and facilities for their communities and families. It has also been rewarding to work more closely with Council staff and acknowledge the huge resource of skills, experience and commitment we have in these people to manage the shire infrastructure, often under pressure of budgetary and regulatory restraints. A mutually supportive relationship between Council and the community will accelerate the benefits that we all desire. I would like to thank the people who have made this year a rewarding experience and wish the future Mayor all the best for 2004-2005.Source: http://gippsland.com/ Published by: news@gippsland.com Related Articles
