Dr. Rowena Barrett, Director of the Family and Small Business Research Unit, is going to Ireland this week to present a paper to the International Council of Small Business about Gippsland’s small business activity. Using data from the recent Latrobe City survey, Dr. Barrett will explain why small businesses employ people. Following the small business conference, Dr. Barrett will be meeting with academics at the National University of Ireland to discuss a proposed research opportunity regarding bonded labour in multinational corporations.

Staff from Kurnai College, Gippsland Group Training, GippsTAFE and Monash University will be visiting the Monash University Gippsland Campus and the future home of the Gippsland Education Precinct on Wednesday, June 11. The visit will be an initial opportunity for individuals from each of the four Precinct partner organizations to meet with each other. All four educational providers will be working from under the same roof. Last week, 170 Year 10 students from Kurnai College made their initial visit to the campus. Year 11 and Year 12 students from Kurnai College will be moving to the Precinct in early 2004.

• Making the Grade

Results from last week’s "On Track" survey showed that nearly 40 per cent of Gippsland Year 12 students continue on to university. Gippsland Grammar at Sale had the highest percentage of Year 12 students who were enrolled in university (63 per cent) in Gippsland. The release of "On Track" destination data complements information on student performances in VCE published in December 2002. The information was part of Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky’s commitment to improving the quality of reporting to parents and the public on educational outcomes.

• Open subject

Semester 1 teaching week ended on Friday, June 6. Exams begin on June 9 and end on June 27. Semester 2 will start on Monday, July 21.
