Australian Plague Locust Commissioner and DPI Principal Scientist, Dr Malcolm Campbell, said the rate at which Fipronil is being used is working, as hoppers that are directly hit with the insecticide will die within 24 to 36 hours. "Hoppers that stumble into sprayed areas within 8 to 10 days of Fipronil being applied will also die over a 4 to 5 day period. This is encouraging news for everyone involved in the control program," Dr Campbell said. Dr Campbell added that hoppers emerging from staggered hatchings in areas sprayed with the insecticide within 9 days would die. He said that DPI is daily monitoring the affect of the insecticide on hoppers and is prepared to revisit an area to provide further treatment if necessary. "Farmers will be advised if they are required to do any further spraying in areas where eggs beds have produced late hatchings. "Fipronil’s track record in killing hoppers that have either moved into an area, were originally there or have hatched, makes it the best strategy for dealing with locusts." Dr Campbell said DPI would continue to aerial spray Fipronil in the Swifts Creek area until there are no suitable targets. "DPI is providing the chemical Fipronil, free of charge, to groups of farmers who have jointly agreed to control Australian Plague Locust hoppers. To register to use Fipronil contact DPI at Swifts Creek or ring 1300 135 559," Dr Campbell said. To report locust sightings call the DPI locust reporting line 1300 135 559.
