Latest News• Add My News • Search Old News Gippsland › Latest news › GippsTAFEAdventurer Guest Speaks At GraduationYoung adventurer Tim Cope guest speaks at awards night Mr Cope, who is 23 years old, hails from Drouin South in West Gippsland and strives to live out his dreams and share his experience through film, writing, photography and talk to help inspire others. After deferring his Arts/Law degree in 1997, Mr Cope spent 12 months on Exchange travelling and working in Britain and Eastern Europe. In 1998 he was selected as one of 16 people worldwide to participate in the International Wilderness Guide Course held in Finland and Russia. During this he led three Arctic expeditions and was the first foreigner to be awarded the ‘Diploma of an International Wilderness Guide’. During 1999 and 2000 Mr Cope received the ‘Spirit of Adventure Award’ from Australian Geographic for his epic cycling journey 10,000 kilometres across Russia, Siberia, Mongolia and China. During this he endured frostbite, pushed 1000km along a remote Siberian railway, navigated the Gobi Desert and was arrested in Beijing. He has completed a documentary about this journey, which will be shown on ABC TV in 2002. More recently he finished writing a book about the journey, which will be released by ‘Penguin Books’ in March 2003. Last year Mr Cope rowed and rafted 4,300km down the Yenisey River through Siberia from Mongolia to the Arctic Ocean and is currently making a documentary about it.
