The new local, national and international students will have their first taste of university life this week when they take part in Orientation Week at the Gippsland Campus. The event kicks off with an academic procession, before moving on to various activities aimed at familiarising students with their new campus. The Student Union will also be putting on a week full of activities including band nights, a comedy night, free barbecues, breakfasts and lunches. Recognising the difficulty of the transition from secondary school to university ‘O’ Week has been made a compulsory activity for first years students. The academic year begins on Monday, March 1.

Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Brian Mackenzie, will be part of the ‘Flag Presentation’ ceremony on Wednesday, February 25th. The ‘Flag Presentation’ is a highlight of Orientation Week with each country represented on the campus being identified with a flag that is given to Prof. Mackenzie. As well as Australians, students on campus this year are coming from Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Germany, USA, Sri Lanka, India, Zimbabwe, China, Pakistan, Japan, Botswana, Mauritius, South Korea and Hong Kong.

• Making the Grade

Dr Parimal Roy, Senior Lecturer at the Gippsland Campus has published a book entitled ‘Family Diversity in India – Patterns, Practices and Ethos’. The book gives a better understanding of the changing structure and functions of the Indian family and its wider kin and to identify the extent to which family values, the nature of family life and family living differs between religious and cultural groups. The book represents one of the few compilations of first-hand comparative research on the Indian family.

More than 120 students are expected to enrol in the Diploma of Foundation Studies (DOFS) program in 2004. The one year program helps students make the transition to university and offers an opportunity to enter all seven Gippsland campus faculties. Every year since the program started the number of enrolments has grown.

Mr Doug Kimberley, CEO Rural Ambulance Victoria will be guest speaker at the first Australian Institute of Management event for 2004 on Tuesday, March 9 at the Edison Mission Training Room, Monash University Gippsland Campus. Mr Kimberley will give a brief review of Rural Ambulance Victoria up to 1999, the vision for 2000+ and the implications of this for the community at large.
