Indigenous Planting For Cape WoolamaiCypress trees being removed from Cape Woolamai Foreshore Reserve will be replaced with indigenous plants. The trees near the eastern end of Broadbeach Avenue have deteriorated and become a danger to the public. By Bass Coast - 22nd February 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said there are about twelve trees near the beach access track that need to be removed.
"Local residents have been sent a letter notifying them of the removal and signs have been erected to inform beach users. In keeping with Council's strong commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment we will revegetating it with locally sourced plants that are indigenous to the area."
The project area has also been designated as a fire fuel reduction zone as outlined in the Fire Prevention Plan for the Cape Woolamai (Safety Beach) Foreshore Reserve.
"We will keep this in mind when working out which plans to use in the revegetation and may use less flammable, succulent species in some areas," said Ms Duncan-Jones.
It is expected that the revegetation will commence over the coming winter planting season with assistance from a local community group.
Cape Woolamai Coast Action group is one group that is already planning revegetation of adjacent areas as part of their continuing effort to enhance this reserve.
"These works were planned with Bass Coast Shire Council’s Environment Team at the end of last year and we appreciate the work of these people in volunteering their time and enthusiasm," Ms Duncan-Jones said.
Removal of the cypress trees is scheduled for mid to late February and may take up to five days.
The beach access track at the end of Broadwater Avenue will be closed. Alternative beach access tracks are available 100 metres in both directions along The Esplanade.
