"Brown gains long awaited tour card"By Gippsland Sports Academy - 23rd December 2004 - Back to News Golf has always been the one thing that Gippslander Anthony Brown has been passionate about. Finally the amount of hours spent on the practice fairway has paid dividends for Anthony, who earned his Professional Golf Association (PGA) Australasian Tour Card for 2005.
Anthony, past athlete of the Edison Mission Energy Gippsland Sports Academy, qualified for his tour card through a two stage elimination process of stroke play. The first stage included three rounds of stroke at the Amstel Golf Club, Ranfurlie course. Players from all over the world; England, Japan, New Zealand and America, travelled to Victoria for the week of qualifying school, as did many high profiled athletes, such as Scott Draper, Australian Davis Cup and WTA tennis player.
However, this did not faze Anthony, who finished 19th after the first stage was completed. The field was then cut down to the top 80 golfers to contend for the 35 tour cards that were on offer at the qualifying school. Stage two was held at the Peninsula Country Club (North Course), Frankston at which a full 72 hole’s of stroke play was completed and Anthony finished equal ninth, which secured his 2005 Australasian PGA tour card.
Anthony has been working extremely hard over the last 12 months to work on his game and earn his professional tour card, being involved with the Victorian Institute of Sport and travelling overseas for in leading amateur events. Anthony has also been assisted by the coaching of super coach, Dale Lynch who has several players on the USA PGA tour and has coached the likes of, Greg Chalmers, Steve Allan and Aaron Baddeley. Dale has been Anthony’s private coach since he moved up to Melbourne to join the Capital / Commonwealth Golf Club. "There have been many people that have supported me throughout the year, Dale has helped my game immensely and it is great to finally earn a tour card for 2005." Anthony said that the academy had been a great foundation for him to start his golfing career, and still receives coaching support from academy and state coach Richard Cooney and Darren Cole, Mike Clayton and VIS strength conditioning coach Simon Webb.
Although securing his tour card for 2005, Anthony will be travelling to Malaysia on New Years Eve to compete at the Asian PGA tour qualifying school, which also incudes a two stage process of 72 hole’s at the Palm Resort Golf and Country Club, Senai. The top 35 at the end of the school will gain their Asian PGA tour card for 2005. Anthony’s first tournament will then most likely be the Victorian Open, to be held at the Woodlands Golf Club as part of the Von Nida tour of Australia.
