A random sample of resident ratepayers and non resident ratepayers has been selected and will be surveyed by telephone interview. The survey covers the areas of:

HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR COMMUNITY Hills2Sea Community Building Initiative (CBI) is a local project driven by the community, aimed at creating awareness of local issues, needs and opportunities. CBI invites the local community to take part in a Community Opportunity Workshop (COW). The workshops aim to cover the communities of Corinella, Tenby Point, Grantville, Kernot and Corinella and Tenby Point Workshop – 9.30am Saturday 24 March 2007 at the Corinella and District Community Hall. This will be followed by a free BBQ on the foreshore. Grantville, Kernot and At these meetings, decisions will be made in relation to the priority projects for the townships and districts. All ideas generated by the participants on the day will be discussed, prioritised and voted upon, forming the project’s ongoing work program. A broad cross section of residents is needed to ensure the projects identified for each area reflect the community’s needs and the opportunities for building stronger communities. NATIONAL HARMONY AT MITCHELL HOUSE A special evening of wine and food to celebrate National Harmony Day will take place in Wonthaggi on Friday 23 March. Mitchell House is organising the "Celebrating our differences together" barbeque dinner, which kicks off at 6.30pm. The evening aims to affirm the values promoted by National Harmony Day, which falls on Wednesday 21 March. The day celebrates the rich diversity of our multicultural society and the core values of commitment, goodwill, understanding, diversity, community and harmony. Two guest speakers from vastly different backgrounds will speak of their journey to a new life in Wonthaggi, the challenges which they faced and their perspective today. Sam Gatto, President of the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society will speak of his experiences as a young Italian migrant in the early 1950s. Man Arou Man, President of the Gippsland African Society will share his story as a Sudanese refugee in 2006. Jenny Williams from Bass Coast YMCA and Committee Chairperson of the Gung Ho Multi Cultural Festival will also speak at the dinner, with the Mitchell Singers providing music and songs for the evening. POSITIVE PLAY PEAPS offers eight weeks of fun and interesting educational activities, workshops and displays for parents/carers and young children under five. Discover and learn about: positive parenting; storytelling, puppets, rhymes and song; nutrition and wellbeing; fire safety and seasonal celebrations. Each week includes mobile resource library, art/craft activties and Mother Goose/Papa Bear singing! PEAP or Positive Experiences and Play programs will be offered during Term Two at Newhaven Hall and Rhyll Mechanics Institute. The Rhyll sessions will take place on Tuesdays from 10.00 – 11.30am, starting on 17 April. Newhaven sessions will run on Wednesdays from 18 April, between 10.00 -11.30am. MENTORS NEEDED Baw Baw Shire Council has successfully secured funding to be part of the Australian Government Young Women’s Leadership & Mentoring Program pilot that will encompass the six municipalities within the Gippsland region. According to program coordinator, Linda Rowley, the program aims to increase the opportunities for young women in rural and remote areas to have role model and leadership opportunities by linking young women with a high achieving woman from their community. "This is one of only three pilots to be funded by the Office for Women throughout Australia, the program provides an exciting opportunity for women in Bass Coast to enhance their leadership skills," said Ms Rowley. "We are looking for mentors and about 60 mentees aged between 18 and 35 to be matched with a mentor and provided with skills based training. "There will be five, single day training and mentoring sessions held monthly at three sub-regional locations for participants," said Ms Rowley. The mentor will provide a role model and opportunities to inspire, motivate and educate young women in rural and remote areas to increase their involvement in leadership and decision making roles. "The program has a focus on the development of skills such as goal setting, leadership and personal development, and will culminate in an awards evening to celebrate the achievements made during the program.
