Gippsland Ports completes a detailed survey of Lake Wellington, enhancing navigation and sustainability
Gippsland Ports has completed an 8-month hydrographic survey of Lake Wellington, marking the most comprehensive mapping of the Gippsland Lakes. The data, enhancing navigation and environmental monitoring, is available online.
Gippsland Ports is proud to announce the successful completion of a major hydrographic survey covering the entirety of Lake Wellington. This survey represents the final piece in a comprehensive mapping project for the Gippsland Lakes, marking the most thorough examination of the lakes to date.
Gippsland Ports has launched an interactive mapping tool featuring port maps with overlays on regulations, navigation aids, facilities, and mooring locations
Lake survey completed
Conducted over a period of 8 months, the survey employed two personal watercraft equipped with state-of-the-art echosounders and positioning systems. The team ran over 1,500 kilometres of survey lines collecting cross-sectional data at 100-metre intervals, resulting in a detailed map of the lake's underwater topography.
"The completion of this survey is a major achievement for Gippsland Ports and for the community. While the data will enhance safe navigation and waterway management, it also offers other significant benefits. The detailed information will aid in environmental monitoring and conservation efforts, contributing to the long-term sustainability of this vital waterway," said Chris Waites, CEO at Gippsland Ports.
The data gathered during this historic survey is now publicly accessible via Gippsland Ports' "Waterways Online" web map. For access to the survey data and to explore our other Ports and Waterways, please visit Gippsland Ports - Waterways Online website.
