Last days for Refugee Week exhibition By Latrobe City Council - 25th October 2005 - Back to News Incorporating Refugee Week, Latrobe Regional Gallery in association with the Gippsland Migrant Resource Centre, is currently hosting an exhibition in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery highlighting issues of the local refugee community.
Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that the exhibition was supported by the Victorian Multicultural Commission and promotes awareness of the plight of the local refugee community.
"The exhibition encourages the general public to realise refugees are also part of the wider Gippsland community. The message projected is that anyone in any country is vulnerable to being displaced from their home," Ms Tegart explained.
"This exhibition showcases work produced by refugees and about the refugee community through the form of documentation and visual material. Local families have come forward with personal items of interest which include; traditional clothes, jewellery and carvings from Ghana, and traditional Polish Christmas decorations, Easter eggs and a doll," Ms Tegart said.
Ms Tegart added that there were also a number of photographs and stories from the West Sale Migrant Holding Centre from the 1950’s.
"An audio featuring interviews with people who lived at the Holding Centre produced in 2002 is also part of the exhibition," Ms Tegart concluded.
The Refugee Week exhibition continues until Sunday 30 October.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, and on weekends 11am to 4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
