of the Bass Coast Series of biathlons.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the long running event is a major fundraiser for the Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club and the Phillip Island Football Club.

"The Cowes Classic biathlon is in its 17th year and the Island Swim is in its 10th year," said Mr Angarane.

"Organisers are expecting about 300 entrants for the biathlon and about 200 for the swim on Sunday.

"Being the last event of the Bass Coast Series of biathlons, presentations will be made after the Classic, for the series and that event," said Mr Angarane.

The Jetty Triangle and the Esplanade near the CBD area will close early Saturday morning with Thompson Avenue closing from 2pm to clear the area for the event.

"The biathlon involves a 500 metre swim around the Cowes pier followed by a four kilometre run through Thompson Avenue, Chapel Street, The Esplanade and quieter residential streets and foreshore paths," said Mr Angarane.

"This event usually attracts a lot of spectators so motorists will need to take extra care in this area from before the event starts until well after it has finished.

"Key areas will be controlled by traffic marshals and police and interruptions to traffic will be kept to a minimum, however the safety of competitors will always be a priority," explained Mr Angarane.

The Jetty Triangle will be closed early Sunday morning for the Island Swim which starts at 11am.

"The areas that are closed off for both the Cowes Classic Biathlon and Island Swim will remain closed for the duration of the event and will open immediately after the event when the areas have been cleared," said Mr Angarane.

"I’d just like to remind drivers to be patient and be aware that there will be more people in the area this Saturday and Sunday."

Registrations for the Cowes Classic biathlon and the Island Swim can be made on the day or by logging onto www.islandevents.org.au
