Rural and Agricultural women interested in improving their leadership and facilitation skills are invited to apply for a three-day workshop being held in Colac from 17-19 November.

The workshop is being run by the Foundation for Australian Agricultural Women (FAAW) and aims to provide women with leadership skills to support managing change in the rural sector.

Women interested in applying are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest form available on FAAW’s website at www.faaw.org.au, and to forward this form to workshops@faaw.org.au.

FAAW, a national, independent non-profit organisation, aims to advance women in rural and regional communities. For further information please contact Val Lang on 03 5596 2014 or vlang@ansonic.com.au.

increase in pedestrian Road safety

A number of initiatives to improve pedestrian safety are being put in place across Bass Coast as part of the Bass Coast Road Safety Plan.

Council has stenciled messages reminding pedestrians to give way to vehicles at a number of intersections in Wonthaggi and Cowes.

In partnership with RoadSafe, Council now have a trailer billboard promoting Pedestrian Safety. This is being used across the Shire and will be located on Phillip Island for all major events.

In addition, VicRoads will be installing tactile markers at intersections across the Shire.

Tactile markers are plastic or ceramic dots and dashes in the footpath, to advise visually impaired people that they are coming to a road intersection. The markers will be installed at:

  • Williams St / Bayview Ave roundabout, Inverloch
  • Williams St / High St , Inverloch
  • Billson St / Watt St, Wonthaggi
  • Korumburra Rd / McKenzie St , Wonthaggi
  • Phillip Island Rd / Boys Home Rd roundabout, Newhaven
  • Phillip Island Rd / Cowes Rhyll Rd roundabout, Cowes
  • Phillip Island Rd / Settlement Rd roundabout , Cowes
  • Corinella Rd (Balcombe St) / Smythe St, Corinella

While it is a requirement of the Disability Discrimination Act that these markers be installed, the Bass Coast Road Safety Committee provided input on which intersections were a priority, based on the levels of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in the areas. The committee constantly monitors Road Safety issues and makes recommendations to both Council Departments and the relevant authorities about suggested improvements.
