The Research Office at the Gippsland Campus will again be presenting a ‘Road Show’ on June 9. The ‘Road Show’ was highly successful last year with academic and general staff attending a mix of workshops, seminars and information sessions covering topics such as human ethics, writing grants, building a track record, ARC Linkage and ARC Discovery.

• Making the Grade

The huge success of the graduate diploma of education has resulted in an expansion of the program for 2008. Twelve months ago the Faculty of Education offered a one year course that would let people with degrees become primary teachers. Demand was so strong that the program which planned for 30 students, was expanded to include 55 students, some of whom not only had degrees but PhDs. Based on the success of the program and the great career outcomes for teachers, the Faculty of Education has decided to offer a graduate degree program for both primary and secondary teachers in 2008.

Margaret Plunkett from the Faculty of Education at the Gippsland Campus has been working with the Department of Education and Training to provide Professional Development in gifted education to schools in the Gippsland region. In 2005 the Federal Government, in response to findings from the 2001 Senate Select Committee into the education of gifted students in Australia, commissioned the development of a professional development package for teachers to assist them in identifying and providing for gifted children. This is currently being rolled out throughout Australia with Margaret conducting workshops in the Gippsland region during June and July.

Jenny Hocking from the School of Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences will be participating in the Byron Bay Writers Festival during August where she will be speaking and running workshops on writing biography. Jenny has recently published a biography of famous Australian author, Frank Hardy entitled, Frank Hardy: Politics, Literature, Life and is also a recipient of an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant with the National Library of Australia and the National Archives of Australia to write a biography of former Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam.

The School of Applied Sciences and Engineering will be holding their Honours students oral presentations on Friday, June 9. The students participating will be given 20 minutes to brief the audience on their research project and 10 minutes question time.
