V8 Supercars On The Way

V8 Supercar engines will be roaring onto Phillip Island from 12-14 September.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 11th September 2009 - Back to News

Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said it was a good idea for people not attending the event to plan their trips in order to avoid inconvenience from the V8 Supercar traffic.

"Try and stay off Back Beach Road and Phillip Island Road in the morning and late afternoon, when patrons will be arriving at or leaving the circuit," Mr Angarane said.

"Stay away from roads leading to the circuit, which could be required for wet weather parking."

Last year, the event attracted 55,000 people over the three days and similar crowds are expected this year.

"Early interest in the event is strong and if the weather is good, organisers are confident of attracting a bigger crowd than last year, particularly on Sunday," said Mr Angarane.

There will be a number of changes to normal traffic routes throughout the weekend to try and ensure a steady flow of traffic.

Residents are advised of the following traffic management plans for Sunday 13 September:

· traffic to the Circuit from Cowes will be via Berrys Beach Road.

· Back Beach Road will be one way out from the Circuit.

· the Blue Line will operate to Anderson.

Evening activities will also run again this year, but the Jetty Triangle will not operate as an entertainment area.

"There will be a band set up at the bottom on Thompson Avenue," confirmed Mr Angarane.

"The entertainment will run from 6.00pm until 11.00pm on Saturday 12 September.

"With this arrangement the Triangle will remain open and accessible to everyone. This was very successful at last year’s event."

The bottom end of Thompson Avenue (from Aztec Restaurant to The Esplanade) will close to traffic from mid morning on Saturday so the stage and band area can be set up. It will remain closed until after the entertainment activities finish around midnight. The Esplanade will also be closed to traffic from Warley to Thompson Avenue during this period.

Cars are still able to access the public car parking behind the shops from Thompson Avenue.
