Vundu to get new home

Members from Bass Coast’s arts and cultural groups have been meeting to discuss where Commonwealth Games fish, Vundu should get its new home.

Bass Coast Shire Council received the fish sculpture, used in the 2006 Commonwealth Games ceremonies, from the State Government last year.

Vundu represented Tanzania, Bass Coast’s adopted nation for the Games.

The fish came at no cost, but it is now being discussed what the requirements are for housing the sculpture and the most cost effective way of looking after it.

It is thought the fish would have an infinite lifespan if kept indoors and maintained regularly.

The arts and cultural group members and Council officers will meet again in March.

$140,000 grant for drought relief bores

Bass Coast Shire Council has successfully applied for $140,000 from the State Government to construct three drought relief bores.

The bores will be located in Wonthaggi, Cowes and Woodleigh. They will be available for emergency use by the CFA and for farmers to use as drinking water for stock, etc.

Two 45,000 litre tanks will be installed at Council’s Depots in Wonthaggi and Cowes, with a smaller tank to be installed at Woodleigh. The works will begin in the next eight weeks.

Council has also been utilising bore and dam water for necessary road works and watering of public gardens around the Shire.

Public meeting regarding proposed port of hastings redevelopment

Cr Gareth Barlow has called a public meeting in Cowes over concerns regarding the proposed development plan for the Port of Hastings.

The Port of Hastings Land Use and Transport Strategy is currently in its second stage of consultation regarding the development of the port over the next 30 years.

Cr Barlow says the draft project could have significant health and environmental implications for Phillip Island and other Westernport Bay residents.

The public meeting will be held at 7pm on Friday, March 2 at the Cowes Cultural Centre, Thompson Avenue.

Cr Barlow strongly encouraged community members to attend the meeting, as the current round of community consultation, run by the Port of Hastings Corporation, closes on March 14.
